The secret of Bormax

How awesome would it be to combine the od guide characteristics of a Forstner Bit with the modern features of the Cylinder Boring Bit? This balancing act has succeeded! This revolutionary invention is called Bormax®…….

A look at the history:
In the era of industrialization, water power and steam engine increasingly displaced the carpenters’ muscular strength at the breast drills. Suddenly, the boring spindles rotated faster than ever before and the traditional Forstner just didn´t bear that!
Due to their peripheral cutting Forstner bits have excellent guide characteristics in freehand operation. However, this peripheral cutting causes a lot of friction between the work piece and the drill. By increasing the speed of the boring spindles, the described friction increases as well. This leads to the so-called “Burn” of the drill. Processing of hard wood accelerates this process enormously. With continuous processing, the peripheral cutting edges turn blue and irrevocable destruction of the structure takes place. If this state is reached, repair and re-sharpening are no longer possible.

A mastermind reduced the length of the peripheral cutting edge and thus invented the Cylinder Boring Bit. These tools were considerably more suitable for stationary use because the shorter peripheral cutting edge generated less friction and the chips were removed more effectively. Now tools were on the market that could be used even for industrial furniture production. However, these tools had bad guide characteristics in freehand operations and therefore could be used only in professional stationary machines.

Modern machines and processing today:
In the last decade, the cordless screwdriver became increasingly important. Craftsmen and professional do-it-yourself users apply these ever stronger and faster getting machines. For the second time in history, the Forstner bit reaches its performance limits. This development is significantly enforced by modern, harder wood composite materials. To switch to a Cylinder Boring Bit does not produce the desired drilling result, since these tools provide unfavourable guide characteristics in today’s freehand operation. It is time to combine the od guide characteristics of a Forstner Bit with the od features of the modern Cylinder Boring Bit. An impossible task?

No: This balancing act has succeeded and is called Bormax®! Actually, the Bormax® is a Forstner drill with an innovative peripheral cutting edge. This peripheral cutting edge is no longer continuous like the Forstner bit but interrupted. Due to this interruption, the friction at the frontal and peripheral side of the timber is significantly reduced.

The result speaks for itself! Compared to the Forstner drill bits, in the processing of wood materials with the Bormax® considerably less heat occurs. The Bormax® retains a “cool head” with a drastically impact on his life. Hence the tool remains sharp for a longer time and the grinding costs are significantly reduced. Through a better chip removal and less heat all of a sudden wood materials can be processed that are a taboo for the traditional Forstner drill. Today the modern carpenter has to work with much harder wood than in the past, e.g. chipboards, MDF boards, European Hardwoods, Plexiglas, plastics, oriented stand boards (OSB-boards), glue-laminated woods, and so on.

In practice, the small contact points of the peripheral cutting edge produce not only significantly less heat but also need less effort than traditional Forstner drills. Therefore the Bormax® is ideally suitable for a cordless screwdriver. Effortless operation is possible even in European hardwoods and chipboards.

This not only saves energy for man and machine but also generates savings of time and money.

The best for last: The Bormax® can be sharpened like a normal Forstner bit. Anybody who is able to sharpen a Forstner Bit, can also grind a Bormax®. It is actually even a little bit easier, since only the individual teeth must be ground and the difficult inside round cut of the peripheral cutting edge is no longer applicable. The huge advantage is that the Bormax® keeps his brilliant geometry after grinding. Hence it remains way superior to the standard Forstner drills!
